
Nicolas Tsesmetzis, PhD
Dr. Tsesmetzis is a Principal Scientist in Shell’s Bio-Processes & Advanced Feedstocks group, specializing in environmental microbiology, metagenomics, and nature-based solutions. With over 17 years of experience in petroleum microbiology, biofuels, and renewable energy, he leads R&D initiatives on bioprocesses and carbon solutions. In his current role, Nicolas drives internal and external research on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission avoidance technologies in the agricultural sector, including nano- and bio-fertilizers, methane inhibitors, enhanced rock weathering, cover cropping, and soil biodiversity, aimed at delivering verified carbon credits. He holds a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of East Anglia and an MSc in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Reading, UK. Nicolas is a published scientist, former Visiting Professor at Newcastle University, and co-chairs the IOGP-JIP34 initiative. He also serves on the ISMOS Scientific Committee.
